England Rugby star Maro Itoje launches his new charity ‘The Pearl Fund’ in Nigeria
Maro Itoje wants to help for the long term, not just the short term. The England rugby player has deep ties to Nigeria, including many family that still live there and wants to help the younger generation as best he can. With the hope of growing this project into a multi-million pound organisation, he is hoping to spread it across the entire continent.
The project will start by funding 40 children through their education in the hope it will break them out of the poverty cycle which in turn will help them, their family and their friends. Not only will it be their education fees, but support will be provided to their family and improved nutrition.
Whilst on the trip Maro also visited Ghana. Thirty percent of the money raised from the Pearl Fund will go to World Vision UK, a charity focussed on transformational education work in the West African country. Here he played visited some of the schools where World Vision operates, as well as finding some time to teach them children how to play rugby.
