Story photojournalists Rick Findler and Georgie Gillard spent four months in The USA – working with UK publications such as The Times and The Guardian. Together they drove 11,612 miles and covered 37 states. Here is a selection of images, displayed as an almost retrospective, of a nation during one of the most poignant presidential elections in US history.
Rick was kindly welcomed into one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in the country in South Side Chicago to hear what people caught up in the gang culture had to say about their thoughts on the upcoming elections.
Auburn Gresham is plagued with gang violence – the area has a rate of 116.56 violent crimes per 1,000 people, meaning a resident has a 1 in 9 chance of being the victim of a crime within a year.
“Blocka” had just served nine months in prison for carrying an illegal firearm and is now under house arrest. He runs a YouTube channel, is a vlogger and helped organise his journey through the area. The underlying consensus is that those of them who are going to vote will be voting for Donald Trump. They feel neglected by the current government.
“A-Choices” said “Trump is kinda an ass hole, but he gave back to the people. Harris ain’t for us man.”
But just because they’re caught up in gang culture doesn’t discount their voices.
“Supa Stak Weezy”, who has been shot like many others here, works in care and looks after the elderly. They may be caught in a world of struggle, but they still count.
It was reported that the Amish community might turn out in record numbers for this election. Lancaster County in Pennsylvania is often thought of as the epicentre of the Amish community. The Times newspaper commissioned Story to delve into their community to document their daily life during the election period.
The Stars and Stripes played a huge role across the election. The flag of The United States of America is the bastion of the country and a symble of national pride and identity. It represents the values and ideals of the United States, such as freedom, democracy and unity.
Whilst the attention of Story was mainly toward the people of America, it would be near impossible to cover an election without touching on the actual politics.
